As a little girl, I always sat on the bed and watched my
mother tying this really long piece of cloth. Certain days she’d call my father
to help her with it. I wondered what she did with it that it looked so pretty
on her once it was done. And like most girls I tried my luck with towels and
duppattas but I never looked like amma. Those were the days I thought that it
was sort of difficult and that I might never look like her nor would I want to
handle something that seemed so complicated.
But of course times changed and my turn came. I know I
started admiring sarees from a very young age. Thanks to my mother who dressed
up only in beautiful sarees in spite of us being outside India. But for the
last few years, it has turned out to be the attire I look out for the most. I
must say that my best friend has played a major role in moulding my likes when
it comes to fashion.
Since the times of the Indus Valley Civilization, women are
common with the style of wearing the 6 yard wrap called saree. The term saree
is derived from the Prakrit term Sati. The name for the 6 yard wrap was given
after the Vastraharan scene of Mahabharata. It was Dushsasana who endeavoured
to humiliate Panchali by unrobbing her. With the favours of Krishna, she was
supplied with unending wrap. At last the Kauravas surrendered their amusement.
From this particular scene of the Indian epic the name of the 6 yard robe is
named as saree.
In today's
world, designer dresses have unfolded their wings among all dress styles.
Designer labels have started producing the normal Indian folk's apparel and
have acquired respectability worldwide. However saree is the solely ancient
Indian apparel that has not lost its charm.
To me, the
word itself portrays elegance, beauty and of course a blessed creation of god “WOMEN”. With
designers like Sabyasachi, I have fallen in love with this attire. His
collection boasts of styles that are meant to suit every woman completely and
gracefully. The royal impression and novelty is something that would make any
lady desirable.
So I was
thinking. As far as clothes are concerned, beauty for me would be? Without
thinking a second I can say – A RED KANCHIPURAM SAREE. One day I shall own one!
