We all have that WhatsApp group that is mostly asleep but when it wakes up, you have no choice but to mute it. So the same happened with one of the groups on my list a few days back. It kick started with reactions to the Telugu version of the Malayalam fame song ‘Malare’ and somehow drifted to reservation based on caste system.
Participating in the discussion that followed, I got reminded of a time when I wished my father was a Latin Catholic and not a Syrian Catholic. I would have got that seat you know! I’m sure Jesus won’t care as much as the country did whatever I called myself.
The constitution of India says all Indians are equal. Oh really?
Reservation today is not just an affirmative action but has become a means for getting more and more benefits. As a matter of fact, the scope of reservation has enlarged to quite an extent. Oh so the backwardness has increased?
It seems that nobody really cares about the welfare of the underdog but wants to gain a bit of the large chunk of political boost for the next elections. Seeing the political mileage it has got maybe IRCTC should adopt it as well!
Nothing much has changed since the past 60 years and we still believe that someday this system will make the change and reform our society. Why do we even have to look around for inspiration and motivation?
What started as a munificent cause resulted in a disaster, leaving the helpless general public crippled and burn with resentment. However, every problem has a solution. In this case, the only technical solution is for all the political parties to unanimously comply for a change. But unfortunately that is never going to happen as they need to survive the elections in the largest democracy.
Reservation was never intended to help the Rich SC kid get an Easy entry to educational institute . It was meant to give a shortcut to millions of SC, ST and OBCs out of the rut , taking their families along and making the society more accepting of them .
It was also supposed to end, but sadly due to political corruption and vote bank politics , it did not. But of course when we say that, we need to remember that it was also thought that the caste based discrimination would end. If our politicians have failed, so have we.
Times have changed. It must be about who deserves.

unfortunately there is nothing called deserving in our system...
